The public services crisis calls for twin-track approach

Owen Mapley says the Government needs to implement reforms 'alongside measures to address the financial and operational crisis in public services – even if we can’t afford them'.

Following the post-election  glow, the Government has turned to the work of balancing competing political, operational and financial priorities.

It deserves praise for taking swift action, such as emphasising the need for true partnership with local government, restoring Spending Reviews, early focus on devolution, recognising the role communities play in growth and restarting work to address audit backlogs.
