UC: This is what we're doing, now DWP must respond

Jo Miller outlines the sector's gripes with the rollout of universal credit, and outlines some of the things councils are doing locally to mitigate the impacts.

It's a big week in Doncaster as we opened the National College for High Speed Rail, Doncaster campus. Birmingham also opened theirs, and it is fantastic to see them both celebrated on national television. But it's also a big week for different reasons as we commenced full universal credit (UC) rollout.

We've had a limited UC rollout so far and we know that 41% of all foodbank vouchers were issued to UC claimants. Rent arrears in our Almo, St Leger Homes have risen by 56% from the points tenants began to claim UC.
