We need the power

The Queen's Speech made it clear that Government has been listening to the LGA on some key issues, says James Jamieson - 'but we now need a long-term settlement that gives local government the powers, money and certainty to transform their areas'.

This year's Queen's Speech has seen the Government bring forward some of the key issues we in the Local Government Association (LGA) have been highlighting on behalf of councils, as part of our ongoing #CouncilsCan campaign.

It is encouraging that we have seen a renewed energy in favour of English devolution, as bringing decisions taken on running local services closer to where people live is key to improving them and saving money.
