The number of women council leaders is ‘woefully' low and we need to do more to support those who aspire to leadership, those already in post have suggested. 

‘If you want the public to feel connected to their local council, to feel that their council is relevant and confident in their council then I do think it's important that women's representation at council leader level is significantly increased.'
