Working together after the storm

At first glance there’s much for local government to get its teeth into in the Queen’s Speech, not least the promise of further devolution, says Bob Neill. But more frustratingly the wait continues for the Green Paper on social care.

Usurped by the political quagmire that is Brexit, it's not often a Queen's Speech is relegated to the footnotes of the week's political headlines. Although the path ahead remains shrouded in uncertainty, I wouldn't be too quick to write this legislative to-do list off.

Whatever criticisms one might have of the Prime Minister and his team, no one can claim there hasn't been a renewed energy in Westminster since July. The modest loosening of the purse strings at last month's Spending Round heralded the end of ‘project continuity', ushering in a raft of new, ambitious proposals on everything from criminal justice to rail reliability.
