York's rural champions

North Yorkshire CC has launched an independent rural commission, believed to be the first of its kind, to give a fresh perspective on the challenges faced by its deeply rural communities. Heather Jameson takes a look.

North Yorkshire is the largest county in England, with 85% of its landscape classed as ‘super-sparse' – with just 76 people per square mile compared with the national average of 430.

While that may make for a beautifully picturesque place, it presents its own pressures for North Yorkshire CC when it comes to delivering local services.
