Council chiefs receive cyber espionage warnings

Council chiefs have been warned their email accounts, phones and computers will ‘almost certainly’ be targets for ‘cyber espionage operations’ before local and national elections.

As councils prepare for local elections on 2 May, they have received regular briefings from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) on the likelihood of state-linked espionage disrupting local votes and the General Election this year.
