Government dismisses union's payout view

New Government guidance attempting to limit special severance payments (SSPs) contradicts advice Whitehall received from senior council officials and may be ignored, insiders have warned.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) issued guidance last week, hoping to limit the circumstances under which SSPs – discretionary payments often made in addition to standard redundancy packages – can be paid out by public bodies.

Thousands of staff could be affected by the new guidance.
