London Councils call for greater powers over pupil numbers

London’s boroughs want powers to direct academy schools to slash pupil numbers, after research indicated reduced demand of 8,000 school places by 2028.

The estimated reduction, highlighted by London Councils on 29 January, covers reception-aged children to those in Year 7 – and has been attributed to London’s low birth rate, as well as the impact of Brexit and Covid 19.
