The trade unions are a thoroughly negative force when it comes to the delivery of public services. Often they operate not only against the interests of residents but also their own members.

The unions oppose performance-related pay. If a school switches to being an academy, it is good news for the teachers, as more money and power goes to the school, rather than council bureaucrats. Yet the National Union of Teachers has ferociously opposed this trend.
