Act now to halt the housing crisis

Housing should be seen as a key plank of the natural infrastructure, says housing charity Shelter. Heather Jameson examines its report and expands on its recommendations

Housing charity Shelter was born in a crisis. In November 1966, the iconic Ken Loach-directed play, Cathy Come Home, was screened by the BBC, plotting the descent of a family into homelessness.

While Shelter's formation just a few days after the first screening was purely coincidental, Crisis was formed the following year as a result. The nation had woken up to the issue of homelessness.
