An audit firm that had one of the smallest shares of the local government market was responsible for auditing councils with the biggest financial failures, it has emerged.

Auditor BDO held just 30 out of the 540 audit contracts in 2022-23, but had financial oversight at Thurrock Council and Woking BC, which have both collapsed following large-scale commercial investments that went wrong.
