Be bold on devolution

Rather than tinkering around the edges of devolution, the Government should use the Levelling Up White Paper to truly reform local government, says Andrew Carter.

Some within Government have been surprised by the number of councils that have written to communities secretary Robert Jenrick expressing an interest in a county deal. The appetite for devolution is more widespread than they assumed.

Many registered their interest after receiving assurances that local government reorganisation was not a prerequisite for extra cash or more powers. If true, this would be a mistake.
