Bridging the political divide

As new communities secretary James Brokenshire makes his maiden speech at this year’s LGA conference, Dr Jonathan Carr-West hopes he can close the divide between central and local government and address the core issues of money, power and geography.

It is Local Government Association conference week and the sector has been eagerly anticipating James Brokenshire's first speech to the association as secretary of state for housing, communities and local government.

It is fair to say former communities secretary Sajid Javid's speech this time last year was somewhat less than universally well received, and relations between councils and central government have been strained for some time.
