Building a better funding model

As councils switch their financial strategies from revenue to capital expenditure to build back better, Tracie Langley is still hopeful the Government will come up trumps with a local government funding model

In a world where local authorities must increase the amount of capital and infrastructure works to build back harder and faster, our council financial strategies need to respond to the swing from revenue-funded activity to capital-funded schemes.

This causes tension when there are massive pressures on revenue funding. The cost of care for children and adults in our post-pandemic world has increased exponentially, creating huge unfunded revenue pressures, which are unlikely to be resolved by the Government funding reviews in the short-term.
