Caution needed around taxation of pensions

Any government contemplating reintroduction of the lifetime allowance should give early and maximum clarity of intentions, to allow people to plan ahead, says Ian Miller.

We are nearing the end of the election campaign, and it is certainly not the intention of this opinion piece to encourage The MJ's readers to use their vote in a particular way. Still less does it offer personal financial advice.

The parties try to catch the public's ear with soundbites that might ‘land well' with voters. Sometimes, perhaps often, the consequences may not have not been fully thought through. A case in point is the shifting reaction to the Chancellor's scrapping of the lifetime allowance, which was announced in the March 2023 budget.
