Councils defend out of area placements

The children’s commissioner has called for a national review of the care system as four in 10 children in care are living away from their home towns.

Councils have defended the practice of out of area placements for young people in care following criticism by the children's commissioner.

Four in 10 children in care in England are living out of area, with more than 11,000 placed more than 20 miles from their home postcode, according to a report published today by the children's commissioner for England, Anne Longfield.
