Councils are scrapping around for a meagre cash pot

The headlines home in on Levelling Up Fund inequities but ultimately councils are fighting for a meagre cash pot that is nowhere near enough to deliver economic growth, says Heather Jameson.

‘The ping-pong of fiscal gerrymandering.'  It is a phrase – coined in The MJ many years ago by CIPFA chief executive Rob Whiteman – that perfectly describes the pork-barrel politics playing out today.

After huge delays, the Government has finally announced the next round of levelling up funding – and unsurprisingly the headlines all focus in on the inequity and on cash handed to the south-east and to Conservative councils.
