Dawes: Elected mayors will make a difference

The Department for Communities and Local Government's permanent secretary has said the reason Whitehall is pushing elected mayors as a caveat of devolution was because it is normal practice in other countries.

The Department for Communities and Local Government's permanent secretary has said the reason Whitehall is pushing elected mayors as a caveat of devolution was because it is normal practice in other countries.

Melanie Dawes told the New Local Government Network (NLGN) conference today that the political momentum that elected mayors would bring would make a difference, adding ‘we have seen that already in London'.
