The new parliamentary term started this week and is likely to go on record as one of the most tumultuous in recent British political history. But largely forgotten amid the relentless focus on Brexit are a number of decisions that need to be made now so that we can continue our cities' track record of success, creating growth for everyone. One of the biggest is HS2, which we think Government is in danger of delaying, watering down or even – in a worst case scenario – cancelling entirely.
The recent publication of the terms of reference of Douglas Oakervee's report into HS2 confirmed our worst fears. Among the things it will look at is the possibility of just building phase one, which would be a disaster for our cities.
