The ‘excessively large' deposits needed to run to be a combined authority mayor are a ‘travesty of democracy,' the leader of the Local Government Association's independent group has said.

Cllr Marianne Overton claimed independent candidates had been prevented from standing by the £5,000 needed to get their name on the ballot, compared with just £500 for those seeking a seat in the House of Commons.
