Devolved potential in Cornwall is under threat from central Government inertia

Sarah Longlands says that unlike the ‘hero’ style approach of the mayors elsewhere, Cornish devolution has been characterised by collaborative leadership. But lack of Government action is putting devolved potential at risk, she believes.

Some of you might remember the famous ‘pasty tax' of 2012 where proposals to impose VAT on hot food caused outrage in areas like Cornwall and the North because of the disproportionate impact the proposals would have on the sale of pasties; yet another example of Westminster's centralising zeal going awry.

But a commitment to pasties and a healthy scepticism of Whitehall isn't all that Cornwall shares with the North of England.
