Rediscovering the purpose of economic strategy

Being able to identify and focus in on the key objective – the ‘why’ – of economic policy is underrated, writes Sarah Longlands. Without it, there can be a tendency to let process dictate delivery

The most overused word in policy and politics right now is growth. It is no longer solely a measure but, instead, has become the only vision of the future that policy-makers and politicians seem able to muster. And, with a focus on growth, comes an outdated economics playbook – relying on infrastructure investment, often in the South East and heedless of the environmental or social cost – as a means of kick-starting our economy.

But what if Rachel Reeves had decided to ditch that playbook and made the growth of better lives the focus of her strategy instead?
