For many district councils in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, the announcement of the go ahead for the development of High Speed 2 rail by the secretary of state for transport last week is a major disappointment on a number of levels.

The proposal will certainly lead to the desecration of beautiful countryside much enjoyed by many people, but provide a major, national piece of infrastructure required for decades to come.
