Driving an inclusive approach to devolution

The District Councils’ Network is clear there is a compelling and positive case for districts to play a central role in future devolution arrangements, says Ian Miller.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) may have a new name that gives prominence to the sector but its relationship with district councils after the General Election seems to have got off on the wrong foot.

Has MHCLG forgotten that districts are principal authorities under the Local Government Act 1972? District areas are naturally smaller than counties, and their statutory responsibilities differ, but their status is no different.
