Smith Square has called on council bosses to back a ‘fully-funded' legal challenge against MasterCard/Visa amid claims it has charged excessive fees on transactions.

In a letter to finance officers and chief executives, Local Government Association (LGA) deputy chief executive Sarah Pickup outlined plans for councils to collectively pursue the claim against the credit card giants ‘at no cost to councils'.
