Exemption laws 'will harm children'

Controversial new legislation giving the Government the power to exempt local authorities from their statutory duties to vulnerable children must come with the ‘necessary safeguards,’ children’s services directors have warned.

Controversial new legislation giving the Government the power to exempt local authorities from their statutory duties to vulnerable children must come with the ‘necessary safeguards,' children's services directors have warned.

A string of clauses in the Children and Social Work Bill, which is currently progressing through the House of Lords, would give the secretary of state the power to free councils from their legal responsibilities to pilot ‘innovative' new ways of working.
