Let's have fiscal levers for local areas

The Government should take steps to enable local areas to fund services through various fiscal levers and such flexibilities would not cost it a penny in extra grant, says Ian Miller.

The Autumn Budget suggested growing Government understanding about the pressing need for more funding and fiscal flexibilities for councils. The extra £55m for disabled facilities grants recognises the work district councils do to help people stay in their own homes, reducing pressures on social care and the NHS.

Attention now shifts to the provisional local government settlement on 6 December, which will set parameters for councils' budgets for 2019/20.
