Government can't keep 'flying blind' on council finances

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is 'licking its fingers and sticking them in the air in an attempt to test the temperature of local authority funding', says Heather Jameson.

Government ministers and senior civil servants are apparently ‘flying blind' when it comes to understanding councils' financial performances, the formidable chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Dame Meg Hillier, has said.

Despite an undisclosed and opaque watch list – much of which is a fairly open secret in local government circles – the current failures of the audit market make it largely impossible to see the true picture of council finances.
