IFS: Budget may not prevent councils collapsing

Councils could still face financial ruin despite a boost to funding in the Budget, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Councils could still face financial ruin despite a boost to funding in the Budget, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

In a presentation looking at yesterday's landmark event, IFS' head of local government finance, David Phillips said councils could expect an increase in core spending power of 3% to 3.5% – however, this assumed council tax increases of about 5%.
