Invest in cities now to reap long term rewards

Given further support, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Manchester could do even more and provide benefits for the nation as well their regions, says Andrew Carter.

There is no doubt Britain's future success lies in its ability to harness the opportunities of the new economy – but despite the warm words from the two most senior members of the Government, we still need a clear plan for how to do this.

Last month, Centre for Cities published a report that urged ministers to implement a place-based industrial strategy that would look to concentrate new economy clusters in Britain's big cities, namely Birmingham, Glasgow, and Manchester.
