Does the Government understand value for money? A recent article in The MJ (17 March, p12-13) about the audit of housing benefit subsidy claims suggested that more was being spent on the audit of the claims than the value of adjustments made.

I was shocked to learn the figures for my own council. We spent £12,220 to have the 2014-15 claim audited. The claim was for just over £32.1m, a large sum of public money. The result: an amendment of £216. Yes, £216.
