Sajid Javid has declared the North East devolution deal is ‘off the table' after leaders voted against taking it forward.

The communities secretary has asserted his authority by withdrawing the legislation for a mayoral deal and cancelling a House of Commons debate scheduled for Monday that would have enabled 2017 elections to take place.
