The Local Government Association (LGA) has questioned the legality of statutory guidance governing councils' use of special severance payments.

Under the May 2022 guidance, payments between £20,000 and £100,000 must be ‘personally approved and signed off by the head of paid service, with a clear record of the leader's approval'.
