Lessons from the Ombudsman

As she steps down after seven years as Local Government Ombudsman, Dr Jane Martin reflects on the key concerns facing councils and why good public administration is more important than ever

As I come to the end of my seven-year term of office I am in reflective mood. At the end of the 2015-16 business year, the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) demonstrated a 31% increase in productivity against a 37% reduction in expenditure since 2010 with better casework completion rates all round.

Our figures now show we complete 80% of cases within 13 weeks and 96% customer satisfaction with our service when we uphold.
