Local government leaders have hit out at calls by Ofsted for tougher monitoring of academy schools arguing that they lack the powers to intervene.

The schools inspectorate issued a draft report this week complaining that educational standards still vary too much between local authority areas and that councils need to be more pro-active about checking on performance.
