MHCLG denies blanket plan to scrap districts

The Government has denied it is pursuing the blanket abolition of district councils as part of the Devolution White Paper.

The Government has denied it is pursuing the blanket abolition of district councils as part of the Devolution White Paper.

Responding to a Daily Telegraph report which claimed up to 30 directly elected mayors could be introduced in rural areas under reorganisation, a Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: ‘We want to devolve and decentralise to give more power to local communities, providing opportunities for all areas to enjoy devolution.
