Ministers have defended plans to block local government pension scheme (LGPS) funds from divesting on ethical grounds, despite MPs raising questions over the legality of the policy.

The regulations, which would prevent funds from making investment choices that were contrary to UK foreign policy, were brought forward despite 98% of respondents to a government consultation rejecting the proposals.
