NHS trusts are forecasting a £2.3bn end of year funding gap, escalating concerns over the quality of care and deepening financial crisis. 

A quarterly monitoring report from The King's Fund warned that a failure to cut the deficit to the agreed £1.8bn by the end of the year put the Department of Health at risk of breaching parliamentary protocol.
