Paying the price of growth

While combined authorities could provide a vehicle for long-term economic growth, Freedom of Information requests by The MJ have revealed significant disparities in the costs of getting them up and running. Sam Clayden investigates

The Government's ‘devolution revolution' promised new local powers, freedom from Whitehall's grasp and, above all, a fresh opportunity for economic growth at a time local government needed it most.

But while councils look to gain from devolution in the long run, getting there could be costly.
