PM dashes hopes for localism and devolution

All hopes that prime ministers forged through local politics would be localists, sympathetic to the plight of local government and devolving powers down seem to have been dashed by the Johnson Government, says Heather Jameson.

Any hopes that the Queen's Speech would be the answer to local government's chunky issues – social care and finance – have been dashed again after the Government unveiled its legislative programme. Then again, you would have to be a true optimist to have expected a silver bullet.

What the Queen's Speech has cemented is MHCLG's position in Government – it's now the Ministry for Housing, Planning and Trying Not to Think About Local Government. And I'm not sure that's such a bad thing.
