The polarised debate on welfare reform

Alison Scott says within any society, there are crucial decisions that have to be made between levels of taxation and public spending.

Welfare reform has been hitting the press with a vengeance over the last few days. However, the debate seems to have polarised depending upon which particular newspaper you read.

The real low point was when the welfare reform debate was linked to the tragedy of the death of six children in a house fire. It is easy to just view this as nothing more than we would expect and of no importance to the long term fiscal position of UK Plc.
