No proof directly-elected mayors will be a success

There is little evidence that directly-elected mayors will boost economic growth, bolster local democracy or provide authoritative leadership, according to a regional development expert.

There is little evidence that directly-elected mayors will boost economic growth, bolster local democracy or provide authoritative leadership, according to a regional development expert.

Director of Newcastle University's Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, Professor Andy Pike, warned claims had ‘run ahead of evidence' amid the hype of devolution.
