A Queen's Speech without jewels

Councils are at the forefront of demand when people pushed into poverty seek their support, writes Mo Baines. But she says the Queen’s Speech failed to embrace the role of councils by offering practical measures that would help residents.

Many would argue the Queen's Speech is not necessarily the place for big economic announcements.

This year it nevertheless opened with such a promise: ‘Her Majesty's Government's priority is to grow and strengthen the economy and help ease the cost of living for families.' What followed bore no relation to this opening gambit.
