Councils are increasingly struggling to recruit and retain senior managers due to demographic factors and relatively poor remuneration packages, sector workforce experts have warned.

In an update to local authorities this month, employers' secretary at the Local Government Association, Naomi Cooke, warned that the sector's historic difficulties in recruiting professional staff such as social workers and lawyers was now extending to a ‘reducing pool of applicants' for senior roles.
