When will we shift away from centralism and 'Whitehall knows best'?

Only four weeks to go and we’ve seen no evidence the Government's promised plan in the Levelling Up White Paper to streamline the landscape of funding for local government has been prepared or put into effect, says Ian Miller.

The inefficiency of centralism has been illustrated again.

‘The existing expressions of interest [for investment zones] will therefore not be taken forward. The Government is grateful to local authorities for their work to develop proposals.' No apology is offered for wasting the effort of many districts, working with their shire counties. Each competitive process involves some councils finding time and resources have been wasted. Is this the first instance everyone's bid has been rejected?
