The sound of silence

Local agencies are often ‘woefully ill-equipped’ to stop child sexual abuse in the family environment, says a new joint report from four inspectorates including Ofsted. Why is multi-agency performance still so poor – and what needs to happen next? Chris Mahony reports.

‘We can no longer stay silent on this issue. We have to talk about it and act,' the joint inspectorates' report on child sexual abuse in the family concluded last week.

But in the days following its publication, none of the six local authorities in the local areas the report focused on wished to be interviewed by The MJ about either the good practice or the shortcomings revealed by the joint report from Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission and the probation and police inspectorates.
