A new standards regime will be a good thing overall

It looks likely that the Government will take forward the work of the Committee for Standards in Public Life with a new standards regime with sanctions holding members to account – 'though thankfully not a replica of the previous Standards Board for England', says Abdool Kara.

Accountability is dear to the National Audit Office's heart – after all, our job is to support Parliament to ensure recipients of public money spend it on what it was allocated for and spend it well. So, I was pleased to see two significant accountability developments in recent weeks.

The first was the Financial Reporting Council's intention to investigate the conduct of the former chief executive and finance director of Woking BC, in respect of governance, reporting, regulations and professional standards.
