We must support big cities to grow

Over the last 50 years, the UK has – deliberately and sometimes for good reasons – made policy decisions that have curbed the growth of our big cities, says Andrew Carter. 'This approach needs to be reversed.'

Big cities in the UK underperform economically.

This goes a long way towards explaining regional imbalances. But we shouldn't take the glib view that these imbalances are easy or quick to solve. And, in the current post-pandemic climate, we need to be mindful that decisions made today don't undermine the real advantages our cities can provide to workers and firms.
