Tirelessly toiling for us all

Elections couldn’t happen without the hard work of local government – yet it has been rarely mentioned during the campaign, writes Dr Jonathan Carr-West

It won't have escaped your attention that there is an election going on. We rarely talk about elections as a public service, but we should. There are readers of The MJ who definitely will not be reading this on election day because they will be busy as returning officers, election administrators, polling station staff or working at the count.

As we go to the polls today, we should mark our gratitude to everyone in local government who makes it possible.
